Rooted in Tradition: Mediterranean and Spanish Homes in San Antonio’s Hill Country

Turner

When most folks hear Mediterranean or Spanish architecture, they might think it’s something borrowed from Florida or Southern California. But in San Antonio and the surrounding Hill Country, this style has genuine roots in the Spanish colonial architecture that’s been shaping the region for centuries. Done right, it feels like it’s a natural part of our local history, not a copycat from another state.
What sets this style apart is its materials and proportions. Warm, earth-toned stucco walls and terra cotta or clay tile roofing define the look. Ironwork details and arched openings — both at the entry and along the loggias — add authenticity, as does exposed wood in the ceilings and architectural accents. These elements come together beautifully, organizing homes around central courtyards with covered loggias connecting the rooms. Deep window reveals shield the interiors from the sun while providing charm that’s unique to this style. Inside, you’ll find tile floors, plaster walls, and beamed ceilings, all bathed in a color palette that’s warmer than your usual Hill Country home.
It’s not just about aesthetics, though. Clay tile roofing works well under the intense Hill Country sun but demands the right structural support. Stucco has to be applied properly to withstand our climate’s heat and the occasional hailstorm. And those arched openings must be thoughtfully proportioned to avoid looking like a costume. Not every client will gravitate toward this style, but for those who do, these homes can feel remarkably at home here, often surprising folks who expected it would feel out of place.
After building a few of these homes myself, I’ve come to appreciate how they settle into the landscape like they were meant to be. If a Mediterranean or Spanish home is the look you have in mind, call Turner directly at (210) 913-8000, any day of the week.
